Rose had been asking me to paint her nails pink for a while, and I finally gave in. She was so excited and patiently waited for them to dry- probably because it was the first time. One trick for drying nails fast is to run them under cold water, but we didn’t need to.
I know some moms feel strongly about not painting nails so young since nail polish can be super toxic. The toxic trio you don’t want on your little’s fingers are:
1. formaldehyde: cancer, duh. also fetal damage, banned in Japan and Sweden, restricted in the EU
2. phthalates: endocrine disruptor linked to fertility and hormonal issues, banned in the EU
3. toluene: linked to neurological and reproductive issues as well as fetal damage, restricted in the EU
Some of my favorite nail polish brands without these chemicals are Essie, OPI, and Zoya. Butter is another brand that’s safe, but I’ve never used it. I really prefer OPI, which used to be toxic, but was reformulated to remove the toxic trio a while back. For me, OPI lasts the longest and is more accessible in salons. Even though Essie’s ultimate red, “Fifth Avenue” will always have a special place in my heart.
